Recipes for success
If you run a manufacturing company then your business almost certainly involves taking one or more items and making them into something else.
If you want to produce your products correctly every time you need a “recipe” or “parts list”. This lists precisely what items go into the assembled products.
We call this vital parts list a “bill of material” or BOM. |

Accurate BOMs are vital
Using the BOMs module’s powerful options you can quickly build up BOMs for all your products. You can create a BOM from scratch, or copy an existing BOM and change it to become the BOM for a new product - great if you have a range of similar products!
Remember - BOMs define exactly which items go into each assembly.
A bill of material for a product is an incredibly helpful piece of information. By using it, the Herschel System can quickly determine what materials you need to make a batch of the product.
Once you’ve entered the BOM for a product, the system can rapidly give you a cost for the assembly. It does this by totalling up the cost of each of the items included in the BOM. We call this process a cost “roll-up”.
You can roll-up the costs of your BOMs in seconds. This means that you always know exactly what it’s costing you to make your products.
So you can make sure you’re charging enough when you sell them - you’re in control! |

Complex products are no problem
The BOMs module can handle anything from the simplest to the most complex assemblies.
A BOM can contain other BOMs. This means that a BOM can have many “layers” of sub-assemblies, with each sub-assembly containing more components and perhaps further sub-sub-assemblies!
This sounds complicated, but using the BOMs module you can cope with any large, complex products easily.
Powerful enquiries allow you to look down through the structure of a bill of material. We call this type of display a BOM “explosion” because it explodes the assembly into all its items and layers. This makes it easy for you to see how the BOM fits together.
And no matter how complex a BOM, you can still roll-up its cost in seconds!
